Love and the Green Bay Packers have signed a four-year contract extension worth a reported $220 million, including a $75 million signing bonus and a guaranteed $155 million in pay

Early this morning (Saturday, 27 July 2024), the Green Bay Packers announced it has signed a contract extension with starting quarterback, Jordan Love.

According to multiple media reports (but apparently not yet disclosed by the Packers), Love and the team have signed a four-year contract extension worth $220 million, including a $75 million signing bonus, with $155 million of the contract guaranteed.

This contract makes the Utah State University alum the highest paid QB ever in the National Football League.

A Brief Jordan Love Primer

After opting out of his senior year at Utah State, Love was drafted in the First Round of the 2020 NFL Draft as the Packers traded-up with the Miami Dolphins to snag Love with the 26th pick.

According to Wikipedia, "Love signed his rookie four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth over $12.3 million with a signing bonus of over $6.5 million."

Love began the 2020 season as the Packer's third string quarterback, but did not play in a single game that COVID-19-hamstrung season.

He moved-up to the 2nd string QB slot with the start of the 2021 season, where Love played in two pre-season games, six regular season games, and started one game.

However, in 2022, Aaron Rodgers' last year with the Packers, Love only played in four games.

According to his official Packers biography, as the Packers' starting quarterback in 2023,

  • "Became just the third quarterback in NFL history to post 4,000-plus passing yards (4,159) and 32-plus passing TDs (32) in his first season with multiple starts, joining Kurt Warner (1999) and Patrick Mahomes (2018).
  • "Became the first QB to help lead the Packers to the postseason in his first full year as a starter since at least 1950, when the league began recording starts for every player.
  • "Was one of four QBs (Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy, Baker Mayfield) to rank in the top 10 in the league in passing TDs (No. 2), passing yards (No. 7) and TD/INT ratio (No. 7, 2.91) in 2023.
  • "His 32 passing TDs were the fourth most by a QB in his first season with multiple starts, trailing only Mahomes (50 in 2018), Warner (41 in 1999) and Daunte Culpepper (33 in 2000).
  • "Threw for multiple TD passes with no INTs in a league-high nine games in 2023, tied for No. 1 in NFL history (Purdy) for the most by a QB in his first 18 career starts."

And as shown below in the recording of Brian Gutekunst, Packers' General Manager (speaking this morning about Jordan Love and his new contract extension), there was never any question within the Packers organization that Love would someday be Green Bay's Franchise Player.

Conversely, according to his official USU biography, Love "... holds three Aggie career records with

  • "9,003 yards of total offense,
  • "12 career 300-yard passing games and
  • "four completions of at least 80 yards."

Other noteworthy stats from his collegiate career in Logan, Utah include

  • A career passing record of 689-of-1,125, for a completion percentage of 0.612;
  • The second all-time school passing yardage leader at 8,600 passing yards;
  • Three 400-yard passing games during his career, the second-most in school history; and
  • The winner of the second most games in USU's history as a starting quarterback 21 (versus 11 losses), for a 0.656 winning percentage.

Bottom line, huge news for USU alum, Jordan Love, his family, the Green Bay Packers, their fans, and the NFL.

Good for you, Jordan!!! 💰 💰 💰
