Salt Lake City's 2023 Job Market Named the Hottest in America by Moody's and the Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal and Moody's Analytics have teamed-up to publicly confirm what we Utahn's already: the job market in Utah was hot as a pistol last year.

In fact, early this morning, when the Wall Street Journal published "Utah’s Tech Hub Powers America’s Hottest Job Market, WSJ Ranking Finds," any question about the frothiness of Utah's job sector last year went down the drain.

According to the WSJ writeup, after number-crunching with help from Moody's Analytics across five categories -

  1. Unemployment rate (ranked 4th nationally),
  2. The labor-force participation rate (ranked 2nd nationally),
  3. Changes to employment levels (ranked 12th nationally),
  4. The size of the labor force (ranked 5th nationally), and
  5. Wages (ranked 5th nationally),

Utah's capitol city came out on top, besting ~380 metros across the United States for calendar 2023.

[NOTE: The report includes metropolitan areas, not just city borders.]

Adam Kamins, an economist at Moody’s Analytics. was quoted in the WSJ article as saying:

“There’s a virtuous cycle where young, highly educated workers are moving into Salt Lake City and bringing in more money to that area.”
